This is a family house in Tonbridge, Kent. The owners wanted a single storey side extension to create a new study, a room they could work in quietly, a little apart from the busier living spaces of the house.
Because this was a householder planning application, the design needed to sit comfortably within the existing house and the wider street rather than stand apart from it. I wanted the new study to read as a natural part of the house, in keeping with its proportions and materials and the rhythm of the homes along the road.
To support the application I prepared a watercolour artist impression of the proposed side extension, showing how it would sit alongside the house and within the street scene. Presenting the proposal this way helped the owners and the council to picture the finished result, and made clear that the extension would be modest and well judged in its setting.
Planning permission was granted, and the owners have the additional study they were looking for.
