This is a bespoke garden pavilion designed for the garden of One Oak, the Grade II listed Arts and Crafts house in the Hampstead conservation area that I had worked on before. It was a privilege to be asked back by the same client to help with the pavilion and the design of the garden around it.
The brief was for a quiet garden room, a writing pavilion set within a planted garden, somewhere to sit and work surrounded by greenery. As a returning project for a client I knew well, it was a chance to design something small, characterful and personal.
Because the house is both listed and within a conservation area, and because the far end of the garden sits under a separate deed, the scheme needed both planning permission and listed building consent rather than falling within permitted development. The design had to sit comfortably alongside an important historic house and its garden setting.
I developed the pavilion through a series of design options, drawing the west elevations and a section and exploring details such as perforated and oriental-inspired screen panels, and prepared a pre-application submission to the London Borough of Camden. The proposed pavilion is a light, glazed structure on a low brick base, designed to feel at home among the planting.
The pre-application response was positive. The council confirmed that planning permission and listed building consent would be required, which gives the project a clear route towards a full application.
